1922 - Once called the fifth Beatle for his role in promoting the band’s first tour, Murray “the K” Kaufman was born, and coincidentally died on this same day at age 60.
1958 - The first Gibson Flying V guitar was shipped out of a Kalamazoo, Michigan factory. The guitar paved the way for shredding metalheads the world over.
1970 - Led Zeppelin II closed in on sales of 2 million just 15 weeks after its release.
1980 - Bon Scott, former singer for AC/DC, fell unconscious in a friend’s car and died after a night of heavy binge drinking.
1995 - Bruce Springsteen performed live with The E Street Band for the first time in seven years at a New York nightclub for a video in Jonathan Demme’s film, Murder Incorporated.
2001 - Tom Morello denied that Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell has been chosen to take over as lead singer for Rage Against the Machine. However, Cornell was later verified, and the band changed its name to Audioslave.
2003 - Ringo Starr extended a helping hand to new musicians, as he announced the formation of a new label called Pumkinhead.
